The
Marine Science Consortium is seeking hard-working and
enthusiastic people to be marine science instructors!
We are located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia,
near Chincoteague and
Assateague
Islands
and the blue waters of the
Atlantic Ocean
. Our
instructors work with student groups (4th-12th
grade) leading classroom, lab, and field activities in
marine science and wetland ecology.
Instructors gain teaching and field experience
and research vessel knowledge.
Professional development opportunities and
opportunities to work with university students and
professors may occur throughout the season.
- Dates
of Employment: June 8th - Aug 15th , with the potential to return for Fall
employment.
- Two
week paid training period starting March 3rd.
- Competitive
Salary: $500 bi-weekly plus housing on station and
meals provided during programs
- Housing
is two bedroom, one bathroom apartments shared
with a maximum of one roommate: furnished, A/C,
full kitchen.
- Additional
responsibilities include: maintenance of equipment,
aquaria, and laboratories.
- Instructors
are responsible for students only during teaching
hours. No
additional supervision of students required
- Requirements:
- BA,
or BS in Biology or Environmental Science with
experience in marine and/or biological areas
- Comfortable
working outdoors, long hours and with children
- Teaching
experience preferred
- CPR
and First Aid training helpful but not required

The Marine Science Consortium, a non-profit
educational corporation of 16 Universities, was formed
with the express purpose of fostering education and
research in marine sciences and offers programs which
range from grade school through university level. The
Consortium is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia,
close to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge,
Assateague National Seashore, and Wallops Island NASA
Flight Facility. These areas are used by the Consortium
for educational field work providing access to salt and
freshwater marshes, estuaries, and barrier island
beaches and dunes. Facilities include housing for
students, classroom/laboratories, cafeteria, recreation
areas, administrative offices, faculty and staff
apartment housing, vehicles, research vessels, and
oceanographic equipment.

Summer Chaperone

- Salary: $220.00 per
week plus housing on station and all meals at the
station cafeteria.
- Dates of Employment:
June 19– August 8, 2008.
- Duties :
Responsibilities include supervision of 5th - 12th
grade students during non class hours, and class
hours as requested. Chaperones are expected to
enforce curfews and other Consortium rules, to
organize recreational activities, to act as a
liaison between students and Consortium staff, and
to address student problems. Chaperones live in the
dormitory with the students. Chaperones are
encouraged to assist in field trips associated with
courses. Two chaperones will be responsible for up
to 20 students.

recommendation.
- Minimal
Requirements: Applicants must be responsible and
able to maintain control over students. Applicants
must be 20 or more years of age as of July 1, 2008.
Previous experience supervising youth is desirable.
**This position has
minimal daytime duties. The experience gained in
this position makes an easy transition to an instructor
position in the Fall if positions are available.**

Resident Coordinator

- Salary: $220 per
week plus housing on station and all meals at the
station cafeteria when open for station customers.
- Dates of Employment:
May 5 - August 8, 2008.
- Duties: Supervisory,
live-in, full time seasonal position for resident
precollege and college summer programs. Duties
include maintaining an appropriate educational
environment, supervision of resident assistants,
chaperones, and students; also assist in
registration and orientation of program
participants.

Resident Assistant

topThe
Marine Science Consortium will hire one female and one
male Resident Assistant for the College Summer Program,
2008. There will be four sessions in the College Summer
Program as indicated below:
Session I: May 12-June 1, 2008
Session II : June 2-June 20, 2008
Session III: June 23-July 11, 2008
Session IV: July 14 - Aug. 1, 2008
The Resident Assistant is a student staff member, acting
as a liaison between the students and the Programs
Manager. The RA will educate fellow students about MSC
rules and regulations and enforce these rules. To ensure
compliance with the Consortium's policies, the RA is
will work in rotation with the other RA. At least one RA
must be in the dormitory through each night, perform
periodic rounds of student housing and recreation areas,
and help maintain a proper educational environment at
the Consortium. The RAs will assist students with
roommate conflicts and other personal problems. The RAs
will be on call for emergencies and will notify the
Resident Coordinator and/or the Programs Manager of any
incidents and emergencies immediately. The RAs will be
responsible for checking out recreational equipment,
maintaining and opening and closing the library and
computer lab on specified evenings. The RA will help
poll students to determine the number of students who
will be eating weekend meals and report that number to
the Programs Manager. The RA will also assist with
check-in and be introduced at orientation at the
beginning of each session, and with check-out at the end
of each session.
The Resident Assistant will pay one-half the cost of
Marine Consortium fees for the College Summer Program.
Resident Assistant training will be done on the Saturday
prior to their first session. Priority will be given to
student applicants who are attending all four sessions,
but students attending less than four sessions will also
be considered.
