Investigate the abundant ecosystems found
on three of Virginia's barrier islands: Chincoteague, Assateague and
Wallops islands. Through special access, and with the guidance of
biologists and naturalists, gain an understanding of these dynamic
natural environments that are designated a World Biosphere Reserve. On
research cruises, collect specimens and study the islands' complex
ecology firsthand. Set a gill net to catch and examine species of fish
and other marine life. Search for dolphins, identify shells, and scour
the dunes and marshlands for an amazing array of birdlife along this
stretch of the Atlantic Flyway. Lectures also cover the formation of the
islands, the role and impact of humans on the area, and the wild ponies
of Assateague.
